Nonverbal Museum Observation

Museums are a great resource for teaching nonverbal communication

Smithsonian Digital Tour Observation Activity

For this assignment, students are asked to explore two exhibits from the list of Virtual Tours at the Smithsonian provided below, visit any of the Smithsonian Museums in person, or visit a local museum in their area. The goal is to observe the spaces carefully and reflect on how the design, layout, and environment communicate nonverbally with visitors. Museums use space, color, lighting, and artifact placement to guide attention, influence mood, and shape behavior through nonverbal communication. This assignment asks students to slow down, notice these elements, and consider how they affect their experience and understanding of the art or artifacts.

Step One: Pick two exhibits (see the Smithsonian digital 360 linked here)

Step Two: Write observation notes on each exhibit

Step Three: Compare and contrast the two exhibits

For steps two and three, please see the attached worksheets linked below, which you can download and use in your own classroom.

Tips for instructors: Prime your students with a practice run! Pick a digital tour to discuss as a collective, or choose one exhibit on your field trip to go through with students first.

Step 2 - Write Observation

Instructions for Students:

Using the attached worksheet, take time to consider each question and write down your thoughts. Remember, these are your observations, so it is OK if we interpret museum spaces in different ways. You will find two worksheets. Please include the name of the exhibit at the top. In this section, you may use bullet points for some observations. You should write down everything that comes to mind when considering the questions.

Step Three – Compare & Reflect

Instructions for Students:

Finally, use the worksheet linked below to compare your findings and reflect on your opinions of the two exhibits you observed for this exercise. You should write full complete thoughts/sentences, but you are not expected to be overly verbose.
